Bowzer Box has tea with BTRC …

Boston 1

This 2016 calendar is an invitation to a Boston Tea Party that has completely gone to the dogs! Most of these photogenic canine beauties are rescues, many themselves Boston Terrier Rescue Canada alumni – further proof of our many foster and adoption happy tails. The theme and style are inspired by vintage teatime invitations, china patterns, and the wallpaper found in lovely little tearooms and quaint cafes. It’s BTs and BTX’s trying their best to be classy, elegant, and sophisticated, and the result is shabby chic pawsh with plenty of tongue-in-cheek sweetness.

Charity calendars are $15 each and ALL funds go to BTRC. Our objective is to raise much-needed funds for the costs of vetting and rehabilitating the dogs currently in BTRC’s foster program, and to provide us with the necessary resources to care for those dogs needing our help in the future.

2016 calendars are available for purchase online using PayPal (https://pinupsforbtrc.wordpress.com/calendar-2/), in store at Amelia Biscuit Company (Paris, ON), at pet events across Canada that BTRC attends, and through Bowzer Box.

Not part of the Bowzer Box pack yet? The Pinups for BTRC 2016 charity calendar has a promo code for new subscribers. Now that’s something to bark about!!

Gander the Newfoundland Soldier

It is not uncommon to hear stories of Newfoundlands saving people, but one showed bravery beyond what is expected, even from man’s best friend. His name was Gander and he gave his life protecting Canadian soldiers in the war zones of Hong Kong Island during World War II.

In 1940, Gander was a family pet and answered to the name of Pal. This gentle beast was liked in the neighborhood until one day; Pal’s paw accidentally scratched the face of a six year old as he played with the children of his home town. Out of concern for the dog and that the incident could occur again, his owner gave Pal to the 1st Battalion of the Royal Rifles of Canada. His new “neighborhood” called him Gander, after the military base they were responsible for during the war.

Gander and his men were sent to Hong Kong Island in 1941 where they joined other troops to defend the island against attacks by the Japanese.  When they would come near the Canadian section of the beach, Gander welcomed the opponent with menacing barks and efforts at biting their legs.

Another time, Japanese troops were approaching a group of wounded Canadian soldiers and Gander surprised them by charging full force!  For some reason, the enemy was reluctant to shoot the dog and the lives of the wounded soldiers were saved.

Gander performed his final act of loyalty during a battle when an enemy grenade landed near a group of Canadian soldiers and out of concern for his men, Gander grabbed the grenade in his mouth and carried it off to where it could not harm them. Unfortunately, the grenade went off in Gander’s mouth, killing him instantly. He had given his life to save the lives of his friends.

He has since been awarded the Dickin Medal, similar to the Victoria Cross given to soldiers of the British Commonwealth for their acts of bravery. Gander was awarded the medal in August, 2000.

Happy Pawlidays!

Happy Holidays Bowzer Buddies!

10682327_312361968961580_3961152939290760674_o

It’s the time of year that family and friends gather together to reflect on the year past and look forward to a bright new year and we are doing our fair share of both. It was this time last year that we were busy putting our heads together to figure out how exactly we were going to make Bowzer Box work, and just look at us now! We have come such a long way since our launch in February; we have spent the year growing our brand, meeting amazing friends and subscribers, promoting other Canadian companies that we believe in and helping dogs in need.

This last part is particularly important to us. There are so many deserving dogs across the country (and the continent and the world!) that are still without a forever home and we want to do as much as possible to help them out. It feels especially good this time of year when there is so much hustle and bustle to know that we are able to take a little time out to give back. We owe all of you a huge thank you for helping us do this. In November $1.00 from every box went to Smiling Blue Skies Cancer Fund which is run through the Ontario Veterinary College Pet Trust Fund. Canine Cancer is a cause close to our hearts and we were so pleased to be able to donate to this foundation which aims to find a cure for this terrible disease. And this month all of our subscribers made it possible for us to donate full boxes to a large number of dogs in need. We are hopeful these pups will find their forever homes soon, but in the mean time their Christmases are a little merrier.

For all of our followers with forever pups in your home, we know that this time of year can get a little crazy and it sometimes becomes harder to take care of your pup the same way you do in the summer time. Your pup loves you and knows that you are doing your best and you’ll make time for a good walk or a belly rub when you can, so don’t fret, but do make sure that as your holidays get underway your pet’s safety is still at the forefront. This time of year presents a whole new set of challenges from icy sidewalks to holiday foods, but if you follow these tips from the BC SCPA you’ll help your pup enjoy a safe and happy holiday with the rest of the family.

Aaaand, if you really want to make up for how busy you’ve been, your pup will be pretty happy to see a Bower box under the tree. We hope that you caught us on The Steven and Chris show or City Line as part of their holiday gift guides! We were pretty excited to be featured and it was a great way for viewers to find out a little more about what we do. We had these appearances along with a pretty puptastic 12 Days of Stocking Stuffers giveaway going on this month to show just what a great gift a Bowzer Box really is. Congratulations to everyone who went home with their own box or a special prize! If you are still looking for a last minute gift you could always give your loved one a special card surprising them with a subscription starting in January, that’s a sure way to start their four-legged friend’s year off on the right paw!

Awesome October

October’s been a jam-packed month and it’s not over yet!

We hope that you’ve had as much fun this month as we have. Just the fact that it’s fall gets our tails wagging! The colourful leaves, long walks in the crisp fall air, and settling in for some serious puppy cuddles on the couch on those rainy weekends or dark fall nights. And all the FOOD that comes with the season, it’s the time of year that even Scooby-Doo gets enough to eat! We love supporting other Canadians so you can be sure that our weekends were spent browsing farmer’s markets throughout the province, taking advantage of the pawsome Ontario harvest.

Is it Thanksgiving or Halloween? This pooch is covered for both!

Is it Thanksgiving or Halloween? This pooch is covered for both!

And what better way to celebrate the harvest than Thanksgiving! Anyone else missing those turkey dinner leftovers already? We had so much to be thankful for this year. Aside from wonderful family and friends, we have so many new family members- all of you! We are so thankful for all of you who have taken the time to learn more about Bowzer Box this year and to show your support in many different ways, including signing up to become part of the pack! We are so happy to be able to bring you delicious doggy goodies every month and we look forward to many more months and many more members!

We also had the opportunity to show a little extra thanks this month. Along with a bountiful “Thanks-o-Ween” box we had  some bark-tastic contests and give-aways in conjunction with some of the great brands we work with. Congratulations to the winner of our latest contest Patti S. Hope our October box gets your pups feeling festive!

October's box is going out to our lucky winner. Keep on the lookout for more contests!

Tomorrow this pawsitively wonderful month draws to a close with a big night of trick-or-treating! Whether you are headed out or staying in to give out the goodies to all the ghouls and goblins going door-to-door, be safe and have a spooktacular evening! To make sure that the night goes off without a hitch and even our four-legged family members have fun, we’ve included some Halloween safety tips from the British Columbia SPCA.

Stay spooky Bowzer buddies!

Summer Lovin’

Long time no bark, Bowzer buddies!

We seem to have just gotten so carried away with all this warm weather and the time we’ve been spending outside that our blogging has got away from us. Isn’t that always the way though. We spend those long winter months waiting for the sunshine and then before we know it the warm summer days are just flying by. We know that life doesn’t just stop because it’s summer (wouldn’t that be nice) but we hope that you and your pup are taking some time to stop and smell the roses, or whichever of the multitude of flowers now in bloom is your favourite!

One of the things that got our tails outside in the sunshine was Woofstock! It was our first year there not only as exhibitors but also as individuals and we loved it. We recommend marking it on your calendars for next year and making a point to head down to the Beaches with your pup in tow—if your pup catches wind of all the excitement you may be the one in tow! We loved seeing such a variety of breeds and so many pups on their best behaviour as well as meeting all of you wonderful pup parents! Along side the tasty local treats and awesome accessories that were showcased at Woofstock, we were amazed at all the technology making its way into the dog world. Two of the apps that caught our attention were Sniffr and PiP. Sniffr is a great networking app that helps dog owners get together (you can find it in the App Store) and Pip is an app that uses facial recognition to help locate your pet if they become lost. It’s pretty awesome to see other companies taking advantage of the internet to reach and help all you puptastic pet parents out there.

We’ve been busy since Woofstock and our June box just went out with some pawsitively fantastic treats and toys. Some of you have been showing us the puppy love already and sharing pics of your dog with their very own Bowzer Box and we can’t wait to see what the rest of you think about this month’s swag!

Our Instagram friend @hansontheschweenie with his Bowzer Box!

We’re on to planning the July box now and we have something special in mind for all of you, but you’ll have to wait and see!

You’ll also have to keep your eyes peeled for us this summer as there are tonnes of great dog events taking place and we are going to be part of as many as we can. Why coming up just this weekend in Embro, ON is Weinerfest! Saturday June 21st will be packed with great events and a couple celebrity dog appearances. It’s a great event for anyone who loves daschunds, or dogs in general!

Hope to see you out and about! Bark at you soon Bowzer buddies!

Spring Fever!

It’s the long weekend and we were prepared to give you all the tips and tricks for keeping your pup healthy and hydrated as the weather gets warmer, but we are almost tempted to post links for winter jackets and frostbite prevention! Even though the weather may not be cooperating we hope that you are getting a chance to make the most of your weekend, maybe taking a trip or just getting to spend some quality time at home with family, pets included. And although you may not be spending that quality time sunbathing or swimming, Summer really is just around the corner and it’s important to start thinking about how to make sure you and your pet get the most out of your time outside and that you’re safe while doing so. The American Kennel Club has some great tips for this time of year. Check them out so your pup can be prepared for all the fun you’re going to have this season.

Speaking of being prepared, we know that some of you have already got your May Bowzer Box, but if you live outside of Ontario and are still waiting, get ready for some fabulous, fresh goodies for Spring. We had so much fun putting this box together that we couldn’t believe it was already the middle of the month and time to send everything out. We guess it’s true that time flies when you’re having fun! If you are still waiting for your box, hang in there, but if you do want a sneak peek, we have had some awesome Canadian bloggers let us know what their pup pals think about this month’s treats:

Our tails are just wagging with excitement over the great feedback we’ve been getting, so keep it coming, we want to know what you think! Something else we’re barking about this month is Woofstock! We are so excited to be part of Canada’s largest dog festival. Woofstock is taking place next weekend, May 24-25 at Woodbine Park, Toronto Beaches. We’re looking forward to sunshine, some fresh air, and meeting you and your pack! Pop your pup in the car, or if you’re in the city, stroll on down and we’ll see you there!

We’ll bark at you again soon but we think it’s time you get to enjoying your weekend. Bundle up for a nice long stroll or join in on a little doggy pile on the couch and watch a great movie; do something that makes you happy right to the tips of your tails!

Smooch Your Pooch

We’re playing a bit of catch up with the post today. First and foremost we want to talk about all of the Easter goodness that got sent out in our April box! With the All About Pets Show and the National Service Dogs Easter egg hunt, our box got a little bit overshadowed in our posts last month, and that will never do.

The April box was once again jam-packed with goodies for your pup, this time though it had an Easter theme. There were ducks and rabbits and eggs, lots of spring time treats made with fresh, tasty ingredients that made it seem like the Easter Bunny himself dropped off a little something special for your pooch this year. The April box contained:

-A delicious pack of fun-shaped cookies from Amelia Biscuit in Paris, ON

www.ameliabiscuit.com

-A couple applewood recipe BARK! dental chews from the folks at NORTHERN Pet Products in Concord, ON

www.northernbiscuit.com

-Some irresistible crunchy duck chews from Etta Says! out of Missouri, USA

www.ettasays.com

-An Earth Rated baggy dispenser that clips right onto your leash and smells like lovely lavender. Earth Rated is a fantastic company from Montreal, QC.

www.earthrated.com

-Pumpkin and Liver bites that are great for digestion from one of our faves, Benny Bully’s out of Mississauga, ON.

www.bennybullys.com

-And… a pawsitively awesome, versatile Orbee-Tuff bone from Planet Dog (Maine, USA) that is chewy, and bouncy, and floaty, and minty… we could just go on and on!

www.planetdog.com

So yeah, all in all it was a pretty great, jam-packed April box. We’re sending out a big thanks to all the pups and their humans that have sent us pics and reviews, thanks for sharing the Bowzer Box love. We can’t believe it’s May already and we’ll be sending you out another box before you know it!

Now, on a more personal note, I want to talk about the title of this week’s post. I (Jamie, your Social Media rep here at Bowzer Box) had a bit of a family health scare this week and a lot of things have come up that have reminded me just how important it is to  show the people and pups in our lives how much they mean to us. Here at Bowzer Box we give you a tool to spoil your pup and make them feel special by getting something of their very own, but we think it’s important that you take care of your pup all the time. I’m sure I’m preaching to the choir with all you pet lovers out there, but just try and remember how much you love your pup(s) in the more trying times. Maybe they felt it was necessary to take all that wonderful garbage back out of the bag, or they don’t feel like going for a car ride today so they howl the entire time, or when they need to go outside over and over even though you’ve just let them out, or even worse when they don’t quite make it out the door before they go. All of these things can be tough on us, but we need to remember they’re not doing it on purpose. We’ve got a lot of things going on in our lives every day, but for our pups, we are their lives, so when times are trying and they get a bit anxious, a cuddle, some reassurance, and a big smooch could make a world of difference.

I say this too because our time with our pups is fleeting. Unfortunately our dogs don’t live as long as we do, and it’s up to us to make things awesome for them while they are here. I had to make the heartbreaking decision to put my beautiful boy Cardinal down in February, just as Bowzer Box was launching, and that was probably the toughest choice I’ve ever made. I know it was the best choice and we still have two more a-dober-able dogs, Duck and Turkey, at home, but I miss him every day. With a whole pack of Dobermans at home things can get chaotic and I think we do a pretty good job of loving and reassuring and letting the tough things roll off our backs, so I am confident that Cardinal knew we loved him and that he loved us and loved his home, I just really do wish he could have a million more hugs and kisses to make sure of it!

So go smooch your pooch! I didn’t write this post to make you sad, but just to think, as I’ve been doing a lot of that this week. Like I said above, we at Bowzer Box love your pooch too, we want to spoil them and make them feel like doggy royalty, and we believe that this kind of love should be an every day thing. Go play a game of fetch, or give a belly rub, or if you have a really spoiled pup (I don’t confirm or deny that this happens at my house) invite them up on the couch for a little dog pile and cuddle, then give them a big smooch and whisper sweet things about Bowzer Boxes to come…

Enjoy the rest of your week and we’ll bark at you soon Bowzer buddies!
